Digital Heritage is a relatively new research area that is considered starting up in 1990s by Japanese research groups including us.

Inside Story

Maybe we can repeat the same question as in Art section: why the computer scientist is doing archaeology? Short answer: no, Ichi Kanaya is not an archaeologist and is not doing archaeology. He is just doing computer things around archaeologists and archaeological surveys.

Who are in this field?

  • Mark Levoy is a famous researcher in computer graphics and computer vision. His name is also popular by his digital Michelangelo project, which was one of the world-first large-scale digital heritage project.
  • Takeo Kanade and Katsushi Ikeuchi are ones of the best researchers in computer vision field, and also known as creators of so-called Virtualized Reality research, which is the base of digital heritage.
